چکیده

1. Cohomology theories: definition, examples including ordinary cohomology, K-theory and cobordism. 2. Products and operations: motivation, definitions and examples (especially K-theory). 3. New theories from old: splittings, Bousfield localization, formal group laws and the Landweber exact functor theorem. 4. Relationships between theories: some natural transformations, the chromatic viewpoint. 5. More structure: motivation, introduction to highly structured theories.

A Course in Modern Algebraic Topology

This is a course in algebraic topology for anyone who has seen the fundamental group and homology. Traditionally (20 years ago), the syllabus included cohomology, the universal coefficient theorem, products, Tor and Ext and duality. We will cover all those topics, while also building a modern framework of derived categories and derived functors using the Cartan–Eilenberg method. We will apply t...

Lecture Notes for Course 88-909 Cohomology of Groups

Before starting, we’ll say a few words of motivation. We wish to understand the infinite Galois groupG = Gal(Q/Q), which is very important in number theory. In particular, we wish to understand G-modules, namely modules over some ring that are endowed with an action of G. Such objects tend to be complicated. Recall that in algebraic topology, we define the homology and cohomology of simplicial ...

Short Course on Algebraic Topology

This short course on Algebraic Topology shall give an introduction to some essential concepts of this eld of mathematics: the fundamental group and homology theories. As an example we will show how those results are used to prove that the Euclidean spaces Rn and Rm are not homeomorphic for n 6= m, which is not possible to prove in a purely topological way.

Morse theory, graphs, and string topology

In these lecture notes we discuss a body of work in which Morse theory is used to construct various homology and cohomology operations. In the classical setting of algebraic topology this is done by constructing a moduli space of graph flows, using homotopy theoretic methods to construct a virtual fundamental class, and evaluating cohomology classes on this fundamental class. By using similar c...

The Geometry of Formal Varieties in Algebraic Topology Ii

A continuation of the previous talk: The Geometry of Formal Varieties in Algebraic Topology I. This time, we’ll discuss complex oriented cohomology theories in general, including the various pieces of Quillen’s theorem describing complex bordism and its relationship to the moduli stack of formal groups. Investigating specific features of this stack will give rise to descriptions of homology coo...
